Today’s the day that we first started officially working on Reaper Rumble. Progress is already off to a good start since our presentation at the John Hansard Gallery, working on top of the brief soul summoning and collection demo we showcased. Already, we’ve nailed down a musical style with our collaborator and initial level design is underway.

What a normal amount of souls might look like, contrasted against a more extreme scenario below.

Here’s one of our initial concepts, with sketches to first creation. I wanted to try and include varying terrain heights and overhead cover to let people get away from lava floors and also shelter from meteors, which meant a lot of stairs. 

The centrepiece of the spiral staircase is fun and eye-catching, albeit unbalanced, so it’ll either become the focus or removed from future designs. The middle area being lower ground and the edges being high ground feels natural, while being a little strong to have such a good overview of the rest of the map.
